Short Description
On chart, locate where New River meets the Intercoastal waterway.

Take the New River through downtown Fort Lauderdale.

Bridges open on command as you near them. All bridges have street name on abutments (bulkheads).

After the 7th Avenue bridge, there is a "T" in the river, a sign will be in a yard that reads North Fork of New River turn Right, South Fork turn Left.

Turn LEFT. The last bridge before River Bend is the Davie Blvd Bridge. Go under and stay in the body of the river.

On right is Summerfield's Boatworks. We are across from them, where the river takes an abrupt 90 degree right turn. Go straight into our harbor instead of turning right.

Detailed Description

From the Port Everglades area (Ft Lauderdale inlet) proceed north through the new S.E. 17th Street Causeway bridge (mast height clearance 55 feet) in the Intracoastal Waterway for 1 mile. Leave Marker "20" to starboard and continue north to the New River.

A large private home with pillars will be to port at this point. Do not turn right and follow the Intracoastal at marker "20". At green Marker "5" turn left (west) up the New River. In a mile, the river will narrow and you will be making a turn to port around a point (Dan Egan's large house.Dan founded Alamo Rent a Car) at marker "11" and then a hard turn to starboard at marker "12". Do not get too close to marker "12" as it shoals here.

In about 1 mile, you will cross over the Federal Highway tunnel (the only tunnel in Florida) and see the Stranahan House, Ft Lauderdale's oldest house, to your right. Next you will pass through five opening bascule bridges spaced about 200 yards apart. All bridges have street names on the abutments or bulkheads. The bridges usually open on demand as you near them.

The first bridge is the SE 3rd Avenue bridge, then the Andrews Avenue Bridge, then a rusty train bridge and after the Performing Arts Center is the SW 7th Avenue bridge. Between the third and fourth bridges there is a power line 80' off the water. If your mast is 80' tall or more then turn back! Once under the SW 7th Avenue bridge, there is a fork in the river. A sign in a yard will say "North Fork of New River turn right, South Fork turn left".

Turn left into the south fork! The last bridge before Riverbend is the Davie Boulevard bridge.

You will eventually come to Summerfield's Boat Works on your right and the river takes an abrupt 90 degree right turn.

Riverbend Marina is straight ahead on the left side of the river (look for our sign) just past Summerfield's.
Tips:
  • These bridges may be locked down during the commuter "rush hours" so plan your trip accordingly.
  • There are some large tour vessels like the Jungle Queen that traverse these waters..give them a wide berth. If you are meeting them at a sharp turn in the river then consider delaying your "meeting".
  • Some of these bridges do not open all the way to a vertical position.. so beware of your mast clearance while passing under bridges.
  • Beware of shoaling around some bends in the New River.if in doubt about depths, stay in the middle during turns.
  • The trip is about 4 miles from the Port Everglades area and usually takes about 45 minutes to an hour if the bridge tenders cooperate.
  • You are advised to monitor VHF Channel 9 for "concerned traffic reports" from large vessels navigating the New River.
